Stop The Budget Cuts

We’re United Teachers Los Angeles, the union that represents 48,000 teachers, nurses, librarians, counselors, and other school staff who work with your children every day in L.A. schools.

We are deeply concerned about Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts. He wants to cut $4.8 billion from public schools. Those cuts could mean:

  • Laying off 107,000 teachers
  • Increasing class sizes by 35%

California is already ranked 46th out of 50 states in per-pupil funding. If the governor makes these cuts, we will drop even further down. Our state is one of the richest in the nation . . . how can we underfund our schools so dramatically?

We’re fighting for our communities too. The governor has proposed slashing all state budgets by 10% across the board. These cuts would devastate important programs that serve our communities, such as health care and services for the elderly and disabled.

Something can be done! We are urging our elected leaders to look at ways to raise revenue to fund the vital programs that people need, like schools, healthcare, and social services. Our elected leaders should act now to close tax loopholes and establish reasonable policies so that everyone pays their fair share.
